GROW – Liner Notes

1. The Most Unlikely Places
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

My dear Rose I’ve lost my mind/ gone and said something unkind/ with no intention raised my voice/ but I don’t regret the choice/ Don’t we grow in the most unlikely places/ Don’t we grow in the most unlikely places/ You broke your back on a side walk crack and all you have to show/ Is how you grow in the most unlikely places/ Father am I still to blame/ Mother told me just the same/ I’m still learning I suppose/ How to live with what I chose/ But don’t we grow in the most unlikely places/ Don’t we grow in the most unlikely places/ You broke your back on a side walk crack and all you have to show/ is how you grow in the most unlikely places/ Roots grow deep/ No more sleep/ Don’t you sing no silent songs/ roots grow strong/ But don’t we grow in the most unlikely places/ Don’t we grow in the most unlikely places/ You broke your back on a side walk crack and all you have to show/ is how you grow in the most unlikely places/ Don’t we grow in the most unlikely places/ Don’t we grow in the most unlikely places

– There are many ways we learn about ourselves. Often the most painful are the most enlightening. –

2. Thorn in my Side
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

There’s a thorn in my side so I guess I have a thorny side/ A smarter man would take it out and leave it on the roadside/ Why leave it in it just grow deep till the pain don’t let you sleep/ There’s a thorn in my side so I guess I’ve got a thorny side/ Well there’s knife in my back and I think I’ll try to give it back/ It left just a little wound though I hate to say I’m keeping track/ Yeah there’s not much damage done why should I let it ruin my fun/ There’s a knife in my back and I think I’ll try to give it back/ There are hatchets to be buried there are lessons to be learned/ But every time I turn around another bridge is burned/ There’s a line that’s been crossed and I guess it sort of left me cross/ You know I’ve let it go on for so long but now it seems I’m at a loss/ I should just speak my mind out loud instead of hanging underneath these clouds/ There’s a line that’s been crossed and I guess it sort of left me cross/ There are hatchets to be buried there are cheeks I should have turned/ but every time I turn around another bridge is burned/ There’s a thorn in my side so I guess I’ve got a thorny side/ A better man would take it out no he wouldn’t let it wound his pride/ For there are better ways I know I’ve just no hope of letting go/ Yeah there’s a thorn in my side so I guess I got a thorny side/ There’s a thorn in my side

– To hold anger feels like you hold the guilty accountable. In truth, you only imprison yourself with it. –

3. What Have You Done
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

Watch the lights fade/ It’s a sad fact watch the third act from a dark stage/ But the scenes are the same and the words are the same and the faces that change they all change just the same/ Such a long day/ To have come so far knowing what you are what can I say/ Yeah my hands have been tied and my tongue has been tied so the nothing I’ve tried has just laid down to die/ What have you done/ What have you done/ As if I really thought you had a reason/ As if I thought you’d change with the seasons/ Get it away from me/ No I’m not glad never was what we had just what I wanted to see/ All the cracks in the wall all the names in the stall all the snakes that could crawl have been here through it all/ What have you done/ What have you done/ As if I really thought you had a reason/ As if I thought you’d change like the seasons/ What have you done/ What have you done/ As if I really thought you had a reason/ As if I thought you’d change like the seasons

-The hardest truths have been there the longest. Illumination always hurts our eyes at first. –

4. Direction or Suggestion
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

How should I know where I’m supposed to go I’ve never been there before/ If there’s direction or suggestion I will take it/ For my hands were never steady I just don’t think that I’m ready for what this future has in store/ That is to say if there’s a way I should make it/ I don’t know what I want/ I don’t know what I need/ I don’t know why I am the way I am/ I don’t know what I’m supposed to be/ There was a light there was a power it moved me hundred miles an hour it sent me on my way/ Every twist and turn it took I chose to follow/ Then something up and busted when the moving parts had rusted and I could see it plain as day/ There’s no doubt the secrets out the light’s gone hollow/ I don’t know what I want/ I don’t know what I need/ I don’t know why I am the way I am/ I don’t know what I’m supposed to be/ Now the progress has been stunted every edge I had was blunted and there’s a flame to every flag that I unfurl/ Odds to gods this is no time to be resented/ For the vessels have been crafted all the maps have been redrafted and all the compasses still twirl. Still I’ll face each disgrace I have invented/ I don’t know what I want/ I don’t know what I need/ I don’t know why I am the way I am/ I don’t know what I want/ I don’t know what I need/ I don’t know why I am the way I am/ I don’t know what I’m supposed to be

-Where do you go when the road ends before the journey? Forward is hard to find when the world looks like same in all directions.-

5. The Badge
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

Another murder in the street/ They took him down right off his feet/ Can’t a man just walk around/ Without your trouble coming round/ Hey hey hey the badge don’t make it ok/ Hey hey hey the badge don’t make it ok/ Hey hey hey/ It’s been so long since it’s felt right/ She wasn’t even safe in her bed that night/ Bullets flying through the door/ And you don’t even know what you’re looking for/ Hey hey hey the badge don’t make it ok/ Hey hey hey the badge don’t make it ok/ Hey hey hey/ We’re watching neighbors take up arms/ It don’t seem to raise any of your alarms/ Give us something to believe/ We can’t live and you know he couldn’t breath no no no I said/ Hey hey hey the badge don’t make it ok/ Hey hey hey the badge don’t make it ok/ Hey hey hey

-Authority without accountability is not something to be honored or respected. It is to be feared or challenged.-

6. The Hill You Die On
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

Changing life is such a thrill/ The faces that we try on/ As secrets of our sorrows spill/ Upon the hill you die on/ Upon the hill you die on/ We march on with an iron will/ With courage like a lion/ And silently wait for the kill/ Upon the hill you die on/ Upon the hill you die on/ Time is all but standing still/ and bygones are still bygones/ But Jack fell down and so die Jill/ Upon the hill you die on/ Upon the hill you die on

-We fight how we love. Willing to be hurt for those we care for. –

7. 90 Miles of 90
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

Two hundred miles from Buffalo to Cleveland/ I’ve come to know like the back of my hand/ Long before I’d find you at the airport/ Holding my breath while I wait for you to land/ There’s ninety miles of 90 left to go/ I heard you made it to the Motor City/ Yeah I know a change of scenery was due/ So turn me north on past Toledo/ It’s just another hour and I’ll be there with you/ There’s ninety miles of 90 left to go/ And I won’t be late and I won’t be long/ It’s so hard to wait so hard to be strong/ Some day I’ll make it to the sunny shores of Seattle/ Just haven’t found the time to get out west/ So for now I’ll settle for Chicago/ There’s trouble sleeping on the road and I could use the rest/ There’s ninety miles of 90 left to go/ There’s ninety miles of 90 left to go

-For someone to want to travel with you is the greatest compliment. Even before they know what the world has to offer, they know it will be better with you in it.-

8. Nice to be Around
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

Oh the days we spend on our own/ Far apart but never quite alone/ I’m not afraid of being left behind/ I keep you in my heart yeah I keep you on my mind/ No we don’t know what will be/ We just have to wait and see/ And though we don’t what we found/ It’s so nice to be around/ All I need is to get you on the line/ Share a laugh or two and I’ll be feeling fine/ Time will tell when we meet again/ But you never lose the love yeah you always got a friend/ No we don’t know what will be/ We just have to wait and see/ And though we don’t what we found/ It’s so nice to be around/ No we don’t know what will be/ We just have to wait and see/ And though we don’t what we found/ It’s so nice to be around

-To be missed is a simple joy.-

9. Quiet Rooms
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

Leave me be there’s a place just for me you can’t see that is kind/ It’s alright there’s still light left to read or to write what I find/ Quiet rooms in pale gloom is where so often looms my heart/ Reconnect and direct your uncanny neglect to the start/ Simple bliss in a time such as this you don’t miss the outside/ Leave me be for this moment I’m free just to be here inside

-From creature of solitude to center of attention and back again. I enjoy my noise like I enjoy my seasons: changing.-

10. Grow
Words and music by Tommy Link © 2021

Days spent wrapped up in your arms/ The little things and letters/ I try to keep myself from harm/ But love will know I could have been better/ In the forest safe and strong/ I hope again to find you/ Though time is short and memory long/ Love will always look behind you/ Every heart that’s shared with out/ Has been there for another/ Never made to break in two/ Love with grow there with the others/ Days spent wrapped up in your songs/ The hints we’ve left each other/ As the forest safe and strong/ Love will grow there with the others/ Love will grow there with the others

-Our hearts are like a forest. Each love is its own tree with its own roots and limbs, growing together to create the forest that is you. –
